World Breastfeeding Week - 1 to 7 August 2011

With a goal to boost the health of infants worldwide and encourage mothers to breastfeed, nearly 120 countries around the world celebrate World Breastfeeding Week from 1-7 August every year.
World-Breastfeeding-Week-01–to-07-August
Breastfeeding is the best way to provide newborns with the nutrients they need. World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends exclusive breastfeeding until a baby is six months old, and continued breastfeeding with the addition of nutritious complementary foods for up to two years or beyond.

“Losing a child is a parent’s worst nightmare, especially when it can be avoided. Why let this happen when you can protect the health of your child simply by breastfeeding him or her?” asked Dr RK Agarwal, a paediatrician.

The World Health Organisation declared the first week of August as World Breastfeeding Week in a bid to ensure that children are not denied of the right to live simply because of lack of awareness on the part of the care takers.

Breastfeeding is known to reduce deaths among children aged below 5 by 13%.

According to statistics, out of 27 million babies born in India each year, close to 1.2 million babies do not get past the first one month. This is due to poor neonatal care and malnutrition which are the main reasons for infant mortality in India.

One million infant lives can be saved by just breast feeding in the 1st Hour following the birth of the child. If mothers and families comprehend the benefits of breast feeding for six months, it can save the lives of 250,000 babies annually.

Guwahati-Bangalore Express collided with Ajamgarh-Marwa Express

At least two people were reportedly killed and nearly 30 injured in a train accident in West Bengal's Malda district on Sunday (31-July-2011) evening.

The accident took place near Jamirghata in Malda district. One bogie of the derailed train caught fire.

Two bogies and the engine of the Guwahati-Bengaluru Express, which was on its way to the southern city, derailed first and were hit by the Azimganj-Malda Town Passenger leading to further derailment of bogies of both the trains, Railway sources said.

An Eastern Railway spokesman said the injured had been admitted to local hospitals and efforts were on to rescue passengers trapped inside two bogies.

Senior Railway officials rushed to the spot to oversee the rescue operations and a relief train had been sent.

The railways has confirmed that the driver of the passenger train that was coming from the opposite side on the adjacent track tried to apply emergency brakes when he saw the derailed express train but could not completely prevent a collision.

J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter site Pottermore announced Magical Quill challenge
The homepage of Pottermore has been updated to announce a Magical Quill challenge. As most Potter fans know, the Magical Quill at Hogwarts senses when a magical child is born and notes that child's name to become a future student at the wizarding school when they turn 11 years old.

The Magical Quill challenge will ask questions from each of the seven books over the course of seven days, starting tomorrow, July 31 – Harry Potter’s birthday. Those able to answer the question will add the answer to the end of the quill.pottermore.com URL, which will then lead them to a website. Once they find the Magical Quill on the website, it will take them back to Pottermore where they can register for early access to the Beta site. Those unable to register in time tomorrow will get another chance to answer another question the next day (and the next…) until the last question is posted on August 6, so don’t give up!

The following was posted on Pottermore’s blog which gives more details about the Magical Quill challenge:
The eagle-eyed amongst you may have spotted the hidden link in our You ask, we answer’ blog post from 19 July, which took you to an interview J.K. Rowling gave in 2000.

In the interview was some interesting information about a Magical Quill, located in Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The Magical Quill detects the birth of a magical child and writes their name down in a large book. Every year, Professor McGonagall checks the book and sends owls to the children who are turning eleven, to inform them that they have a place at Hogwarts.

Each day for seven days, from 31 July to 6 August, we will be placing a clue on the Pottermore homepage to help you locate The Magical Quill. If you find it, you’ll have the chance to gain early access to Pottermore.

There will be a new clue every day, and each clue will relate to a different book in the Harry Potter series. On Day 1 the clue will relate to Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, on Day 2 the clue will relate to Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, and so forth. The clues will also vary in difficulty. On Days 1-3 the clues will be harder, and on Days 4-7 the clues will be easier.

To find The Magical Quill, you need to solve the clue and add the answer to the end of the web address quill.pottermore.com/ This will lead you to a website where The Magical Quill will be located while early access places are available. The Magical Quill’s location will change every day. Read More

TN Police: Stalin was not arrested

Denying that Stalin, son of DMK chief M Karunanidhi was arrested or detained, Tamilnadu police said that he was merely moved as he was obstructing traffic.
Tamilnadu-DMK-politician-M-Karunanidhi-son-Stalin-2011-July
Earlier reports said that M K Stalin was detained by police at Tiruvarur. The DMK leader was trying to stage a protest, when police attempted to arrest DMK's Tiruvarur secretary Kalaivanan.

The police had been looking for the DMK functionary in connection with the death of a school student in a road accident in Tiruvarur on Friday.

Mr Stalin had reportedly demanded an arrest warrant or FIR copy before the arrest, and it was then that he was taken into detention.

The DMK had given the call for boycott of schools and colleges to press for implementation of the Uniform System of School Education (Tamil: Samacheer Kalvi), introduced by the Karunanidhi regime.

The AIADMK Government is engaged in a legal battle after it decided to defer implementation of the scheme citing its "lack of quality".

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa yesterday (29-July-2011) blamed the DMK protest for leading to the death of the boy and charged Kalaivanan with instigating his party workers to prevent students from attending classes.

Student's death

Police registered a case against Mr. Kalaivanan in connection with the death of Vijay of Manjakollai, an eighth standard student of the Government Higher Secondary School, Koradachery. Vijay died on his way home from school on Friday when the government bus in which he was travelling met with an accident.
Tamilnadu-AIADMK-politician-CM-Jayalalithaa-2011-July
The children were sent from school after an agitation organised by Mr. Kalaivanan for implementing the Samacheer Kalvi system immediately. Three other students were injured in the accident. Baskar, father of one of the injured students, lodged a complaint with police that Mr. Kalaivanan was responsible for the accident as he (Mr. Kalaivanan) had insisted on the students' boycotting classes.

The police registered cases against Mr. Kalaivanan under sections 143 (unlawful assembly), 188 (preventing people from discharging duties), 268 (conspiracy and 506/2 threat to murder.

As the news about the alleged arrest of Mr. Stalin spread, DMK cadres organised demonstrations at various places in Thanjavur and Tiruvarur districts. They were arrested by the police and later released.

Speak Asia News, Speak Asia, Speak Asia Latest News, Bizbasket - Speak Asia COO arrested in Rs 1,320 cr fraud case

The first arrests have been made in the Rs 1320 crore Speak Asia fraud case. Mumbai police have arrested the online survey company's COO Tarak Bajpai and four other officials into custody. But the Singapore-based owner of the ponzi scheme company is still absconding.

"We have registered an FIR under cheating and criminal conspiracy (section 120b)," said Joint Commissioner of Mumbai Police (Crime) Himanshu Roy.

Based on a subscription model, Speak Asia collected Rs 11,000 from each member. The members were then paid for completing the surveys commissioned by various companies.

While many companies deny commissioning such surveys, the Mumbai police estimates that the total amount collected could well be over Rs 1320 crore. A case was also filed in the Economic Offences wing.

Once the scam was unearthed earlier in May this year, the members complained that they had not received the money promised as the company claimed its accounts were frozen. Speak Asia officials, however, claimed innocence.

"Their property must be attached and actions should be taken against other companies involved in similar activities under the Investor Protection Act," said BJP leader and complainant Kirit Somaiya.

The accused in the Pyramid scam have now been granted police custody till August 4 even as the money flow of Speak Asia is being closely looked into. Read More

Hundreds of fans gathered outside a Barranquilla hospital Tuesday to honor Colombian salsa legend Joe Arroyo who died in the medical earlier that day. The Archbishop of Barranquilla announced "El Joe" will be buried Wednesday afternoon, as his hometown of Cartagena decreed two days of official mourning.

According to Barranquilla newspaper El Heraldo, singer Willy Calderon joined the crowd at the hospital to sing in honor of the deceased "god" of salsa.

The death of one of Colombia's greatest salsa artists caused a wave of grief throughout Colombia.

"All media mourn the death of Joe Arroyo. El Tiempo brotherly embraces his friends and family," the country's leading newspaper tweeted. Numerous prominent Colombians expressed their grief over the death of Arroyo through the social media website.

The city of Cartagena, where the singer was born, declared two days of official mourning and ordered all flags to immediately be hung half mast. Music from the artist will be played in the historic center of the walled city to honor the city's "eldest son."

The governor ordered the official city banner to be brought to Barranquilla to be put over the coffin of Arroyo, whose body will be displayed in the cathedral of the port city where the archbishop announced a wake starting at 4PM.

"The Archbishop of Barranquilla calls on the whole community touched by the artist to respectfully and serenely live through these moments of sadness in which the best tribute we can offer is to unite the prayers of Colombians so that the soul of our beloved and always remembered Joe Arroyo may rest in the peace of the Lord," the Archbishop announced. Hackers ask PayPal users to quit using the service

Hacking group Anonymous is asking PayPal users to "immediately close their accounts and consider an alternative," as a way of protesting the arrests of 14 people tied to a denial-of-service attack on PayPal's website last December. That attack, which brought down the site, was said to be retribution against PayPal for dropping WikiLeaks' donation account.
PayPal-attack-anonymous-2011-July
"PayPal continues to withhold funds from WikiLeaks, a beacon of truth in these dark times," the groups said in a statement.

"We encourage anyone using PayPal to immediately close their accounts and consider an alternative," they said.

"The first step to being truly free is not putting one's trust into a company that freezes accounts when it feels like, or when it is pressured by the US government," they added.

Various Anonymous Twitter accounts are making a call for action. Anonymous Press tweets: "Paypal suspended the closing of accounts online, so call in and close ur account 1-888-221-1161 make sure 2 quote #OpPayPal via@odotm"

Wikileaks is showing support by tweeting: "We support the work of #Anonymous in drawing attention to the economic blockade of #Wikileaks by corrupt financial institutions. #OpPayPal"

So far, however, the campaign may not be having much effect.

"We haven't seen any changes to our normal operations (including account opening and closing) overnight," a PayPal spokeswoman told CNN via e-mail on Wednesday (27-July-2011).

Anonymous wants PayPal users to switch to other similar services.
"Get yourself a slice of MyBitCoin, Liberty Reserve, WebMoney, Neteller, Moneybookers, and start using prepaid credit and gift cards," tweeted allied hacking group LulzSec.

Foreign ministers of India and Pakistan begin talks

India's external affairs minister SM Krishna and his Pakistani counterpart Hina Rabbani Khar on Wednesday (27-July-2011) began talks that are expected to culminate in a host of confidence-building measures (CBMs).

While India will talk of eradicating terror in the region, Pakistan is expected to insist on maintaining peace in the area.

The foreign ministers of India and Pakistan are expected to follow a carefully drafted template to take the peace process forward through a 'step-by-step' approach.

In his public welcoming remarks, Mr Krishna said, "India looks forward to a cooperative relationship with Pakistan... it is in the interest of peace not only for our two countries but for the entire region and beyond. Perhaps we owe this to ourselves as well as to succeeding generations."

Ms Khar, who is Pakistan's youngest Foreign Minister, said, "Pakistan sees good friendly and cooperative relations with India as an important neighbour.
Indian-foreign-minister-SM-Krishna
"We feel the relationship between the two countries should not be held hostage by the past." She also stressed that officials on both sides must be "respectful of the reality of the two countries."

The meeting comes five months after the South Asian neighbours resumed bilateral discussions.

Talks were suspended after the 2008 Mumbai (Bombay) attacks which India blamed on Pakistan-based militants.

But earlier this year, leaders vowed to resume their dialogue.

Correspondents say the talks are unlikely to throw up any major policy statements, but they will be another step in improving relations between the neighbours.

Joe, El Tiempo, El Heraldo De Barranquilla, El Tiempo.Com.Co, Murio Joe Arroyo, Noticias Rcn:"Joe Nelms' Prayer Perfect for NASCAR Event "

Videos of Tennessee Baptist pastor Joe Nelm's pre NASCAR race prayer, laced with product promotions and references to his "smoking hot wife" have spread like wildfire, not only on YouTube, but on local TV stations and major cable shows across the country.

Drivers with their heads bowed, presumably to ask for divine protection before they jump into their cars to risk their necks on the track, were shown giggling as Nelms thanked God for the "Dodges and Toyotas," for " Sunoco Racing Fuel and Goodyear Tires that bring performance and power to the track." Snickering turned to outright laughter when he ended his prayer with a "In Jesus name, boogity boogity boogity, Amen." Read More

angies list, ioffer, simat, uagrm, ubv, ufmg

Dear Angie:

Last May we hired a contractor to replace our concrete driveway. He did a very nice job, but we now have a medium sized crack near our entry door that is difficult to ignore. Others have pointed it out as well. We spoke to the contractor who set up an appointment, but then was a no show. He rescheduled after we called him again, but again was a no show. We have since left several messages on his cell phone, emailed him, and left a message on his business line. No response. This contractor is listed on Angie's List. Aside from making a formal complaint through your site, do I have any recourse to get him to repair this unsightly crack?

There Is One Apple, But Many Microsofts: The Company You Don’t Know | brand-new operating system, cool new MacBook Airs and maybe-not-quite-as-cool-but-whoa-no-optical-drive Mac Minis

Apple’s customers (like me) got a brand-new operating system, cool new MacBook Airs and maybe-not-quite-as-cool-but-whoa-no-optical-drive Mac Minis. Meanwhile, tech and business reporters (like me) got a quarterly earnings report that had some of us (okay, it was me) making jokes about Steve Jobs diving like Scrooge McDuck into a room full of gold Krugerrands.
Microsoft released their quarterly earnings results, too. And they’re almost as huge. Redmond made almost $6 billion in net income on more than $17 billion in revenue. That’s a record quarter — and remember, Microsoft’s been making a lot of money for a long time, in much better economies than this — and a 30% jump in profits from 2010.
Now, here’s where it gets interesting: Microsoft scored its record quarter with mostly flat growth in PC sales — where Windows and Windows Live revenue, its biggest business since forever, actually dropped. Three months where the company didn’t release a significant new product. Three months where the typical Microsoft stories you read at Wired or elsewhere were about things like whether CEO Steve Ballmer should resign.

Apple crushed its quarter mostly because it’s been selling new iPads faster than it can make them. It’s opening up enterprise and foreign markets where it’s never found success before. Its most popular product is a store wrapped in gorgeous hardware its owners carry around with them everywhere they go.
Bloggers are writing Apple-inspired fan fiction faced with the prospect that the company maybe might use a fraction of its Scrooge McDuck money to snap up TV streaming service Hulu. I know it might not really make sense! And some of the sources leaking this story might be trying to goose Hulu’s purchase price or Apple stock! But who cares? It would be so awesome!
Ultimately, it doesn’t matter. When a company is as successful as Apple’s been lately, anything seems possible.

Apple is cruising. Microsoft is scrapping.
And that’s why I think — against all odds — Microsoft has suddenly become more interesting than Apple.
For a long time, it was the other way around. Microsoft couldn’t make a mistake, and Apple was on the ropes, with no hope but to innovate their way out.
Like almost everyone else, I used almost all Microsoft and PC-compatible software and hardware, but Apple was always more interesting.
  • An all-in-one computer with no floppy drive? Wow.
  • A digital-only music player? That’s a cool idea.
  • iPhone? I never wanted a smartphone before, but I would really love something like that.
But now, even as I (like most everyone else) use more of Apple’s stuff, I think I’m more fascinated by Microsoft — particularly the Microsoft that most of us don’t usually think about.
If you walk into an Apple store, particularly if you play with an iPad or iPhone, you get to see almost everything that Apple does. It’s a monolithic company, built like a pyramid. All the pieces fit together, even the imperfect ones. Everything compliments and supplements everything else.

Microsoft, by contrast, is at least — at least! — three different companies. And since we’re all geeks here, I’m going to loosely name them after three different comic book iterations of Marvel’s superhero team The Avengers.
  1. Mighty Microsoft. The Microsoft everyone knows: Windows, Office, Internet Explorer, Hotmail. Boring, maybe, but still mighty. Every new version, every interface quirk, is a big deal. Part of our common culture that lives and dies by the PC business. This Microsoft was largely flat this quarter (although Office did pretty well). The growing-but-still-not-profitable Online Services division, which includes Bing, straddles both Mighty Microsoft and…
  2. New Microsoft. The Microsoft for which a retail store would actually make sense: Xbox 360, Kinect, Windows Phone 7 — everything from the entertainment and hardware division, which had a gangbusters quarter.
I’ll also include the amazing Microsoft Research team as part of New Microsoft. They’re the closest thing we have to the legendary Xerox PARC today (even including some of the same people). Microsoft Research regularly turns out great projects, some of which eventually feed into great retail products — although you could also call them part of…
  3. Secret Microsoft. This is the Microsoft whose services you end up using as a consumer even though you never see the word Microsoft — something that never happens with Apple. It’s also the Microsoft that partners with enterprises and governments and other corporations. The Microsoft, for which, unlike Apple, business revenue is never a surprise.
The ugly side of Secret Microsoft is the stuff that resembles patent trolling and rent-seeking. For instance, Microsoft makes a little bit of money on Amazon’s Kindle. Does the Kindle use Microsoft tech? Not really. But the Kindle uses some Linux, and Microsoft claims Linux violates its patents. So Amazon pays a licensing fee, because really, who wants to fight Microsoft?
Here are some better Secret Microsoft stories, which go a long way towards explaining why Microsoft continues to rake in money: Matt Rosoff observes that Microsoft’s quarterly report includes $17.1 billion of “unearned revenue.”

What’s “unearned revenue”? Money that Microsoft has collected up front for new long-term government and business deals, but which will be accounted for over the life of the contracts. So while Mighty Microsoft might not be showing big bank, Secret Microsoft just re-upped and/or upsold a whole bunch of the company’s best customers for the foreseeable future.

Another Secret Microsoft story concerns a subject close to my heart, the alliance between Microsoft and Facebook. Tricia Duryee reports on Microsoft’s latest work with game developers for social networks.
Microsoft gives the game developers prefab backend tools, all the boring stuff game coders hate bothering with, including stuff like managing user profiles and collecting and cashing in Facebook credits. In return, the game developers host their games with Microsoft’s Azure rather than a cloud competitor like Amazon. Everyone wins! (Except Amazon.)

There’s a great line in the HBO series “The Wire,” where one of the detectives, Lester Freamon, talks about a major problem policing drugs in any American city: “You follow drugs, you get drug addicts and drug dealers. But you start to follow the money, and you don’t know where the f— it’s gonna take you.”
I feel the same way about Apple and Microsoft. If you follow Apple, you get plenty of information about what’s happening right now in technology for consumers. When you follow Microsoft, you start discovering a lot more about how the entire technology industry works — and where it’s headed. Source This Article Is Here

Research In Motion (RIM), Stephen Hawking, Crackberry, Techcrunch, Amozon - First Nokia, Now RIM: The Mighty Are Falling

Research In Motion Limited (RIM) (TSX: RIM, NASDAQ: RIMM) is a Canadian telecommunication and wireless device company best known as the developer of the BlackBerry smartphone.

RIM is headquartered in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. It was founded by Mike Lazaridis, who currently serves as its co-CEO along with Jim Balsillie.

Research in Motion, whose Blackberry handsets dominated the mobile phone scene only a few short years ago, announced Monday it was cutting 2,000 jobs — about 11 percent of its global workforce — as it falls further behind the curve now defined by the iPhone and Android-powered smartphones.

In cutting workers for the first time in a decade RIM joins Nokia as a once-mighty player who couldn’t or wouldn’t adapt quickly enough to a pace of innovation and quixotic consumer expectations that has only accelerated since the introduction of the original iPhone in June 2007. In what seems like the blink of an eye RIM is now playing a game of catchup with upstarts Apple and Google — big, powerful competitors who came out of nowhere to to become chip leaders in the high stakes smartphone game.

Nokia got hit with the same head wind. The biggest phone maker in the world — 28.2 percent of the market at the end of last year — announced in February that it was ditching its Symbian smartphone operating system and replacing it with software from Microsoft.

RIM is now the No. 3 smartphone platform, behind Android and iOS, according to Comscore. In terms of handset market share it is fifth, dropping in the quarter ended April 30 behind Apple, which makes exactly one phone.

Until recently RIM primarily pegged its success to the enterprise, where IT departments in one fell swoop would provide boatloads of “Crackberries” to armies of employees. But the model is cracking. There is a growing trend of “Bring Your Own Device” — and the devices employees are bringing are increasingly not Blackberries. RIM’s foray into the tablet arena was anti-climactic, with the Playbook getting weak reviews and inexplicably lacking the ability to receive e-mail on its own. Indeed, the number-one tablet permissioned for the enterprise is the iPad, besting even all Android tablets and smartphones combined. The iPad even accounts for 46 per cent of activations in the financial services sector — one of RIM’s stronghold.

RIM won’t disappear any time soon, of course. But one of big factors determining success may be out of its control: developer interest. Apps are major driver of hardware purchasing decisions and here again Apple and Android are in the lead. Like Nokia, RIM plans to dump its current operating system for its suite of smartphones and adopt QNX, which already powers the Playbook.

It hasn’t said when. Speed is of the essence.
“I think the key here, more than ever, is when do their products launch and what kind of reception will they have and most importantly, when will QNX come in,” Peter Misek, an analyst at Jefferies & Co. Misek, told Reuters. “We don’t think those answers are here yet.”  Read More
