All of today's papers are running stories about last night's event. The glitz and the glamour seems to have enthralled everyone as enthusiasm for both the participants and the audience was running high. The Globe joked that the award ceremony "opened with a Dabangg" as the Salman Khan movie walked away with 10 awards including Best Film and Best Screenplay. However, in a bit of a surprise, Best Actor did not go to Salman Khan but went instead to Shahrukh Khan, the star of the film "My Name is Khan". This melodrama about Muslims facing backlash after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks also picked up four other awards including best director for Karan Johar.
CTV reports that of the 22,000 tickets available to the public , roughly 16,000 of the sold out in minutes. If you were lucky enough to get a seat, prices varied between $49 and $125 and supposedly resellers were offering last-minute tickets online for as much as $1,500 each. Reuters added that while tens of thousands were in attendance at a Toronto stadium for the 12th edition of the IIFA awards, a worldwide TV audience of up to 700 million viewers were expected to have tuned in for the show.
